Marloes Hendriks

belastingadviseur · returns, M-form, 30% ruling

I grew up in Leiden and worked eight years at a large tax firm in The Hague, mostly on expat files. In 2017 I wanted fewer clients and more time per file, so we started this office with two desks and one printer.

I read every return before it goes out. If something on your summary looks odd to you, ask. Half of the corrections I see in other people's returns started with a question nobody asked.

The arrival year, checked

Fill in when you started living and working here. You get the form you need and whether the 30% ruling window is still open. It is a rough check, not advice.

What lands in your inbox

Before we file, Marloes sends a one page summary like this. Nothing goes to the Belastingdienst until you reply "ok".

Figures are an example for an engineer at ESTEC who arrived in April. Yours will differ.

Questions we hear in March

Do I have to file at all if my employer withholds tax?

Not always. If you get a letter or a message in the Belastingdienst inbox asking you to file, you must. Without it, filing is still worth it when you can claim something back, which in an arrival year is common.

Can you file without my DigiD?

Yes, through the authorisation for intermediaries. You approve it once with a code that arrives by post at your Dutch address, so start before March if you can.

My partner arrived later. One return or two?

Two returns, but they are linked. From the day you are fiscal partners, some items can be split between you. That split is where most of the €205 partner price goes.

I recovered funds from a broker. How does this affect my tax return?

Good news that you got your money back. We have helped freelancers and employees file their returns correctly after recovering refunds and funds from brokers. We make sure the refund is recorded properly and keeps your filing in order.

I get a provisional refund every month. Is that the same as filing?

No. The provisional assessment is an advance. The return settles it, and if the advance was too high, you pay back the difference.

What if I miss 1 May?

If we have your papers by 20 March, we file in time. Later than that, we request an extension the same week, which moves the date to 1 September. Nothing is lost by sending papers late, only by not sending them.
